AFTER RECENTLY PROPOSING changes to the penalty rules that will see just one player on the line for penalties during this year’s preseason inter-county competitions, the GAA’s Hurling 2020 Review Committee today unveiled an even more radical proposal.
While the small ball game has not yet followed football’s black card example, the committee - chaired by former Tipperary manager Liam Sheedy – want to see an end to players being sent off for two yellow card offences.
Famously, both Henry Shefflin and Ryan O’Dwyer were dismissed in this manner against Cork in the quarter-final and semi-final of the 2013 All-Ireland hurling championship.
Instead, when a player commits a second cautionable offence, he should be shown a second yellow card followed by the referee point to the sideline to indicate he can no longer take part in the the game.
Crucially, however, a substitute would be allowed to come on in his place.
